Connie Gallippi, la fundadora de la primera ONG en recibir donaciones en bitcoin, aseguró que las organizaciones sin fines de lucro se beneficiarán del ahorro en tiempo y dinero

Connie Gallippi es la fundadora y directora ejecutiva de BitGive, la primera organización sin fines de lucro del mundo que recibe donaciones en bitcoin. La fundación busca cerrar la brecha entre una tecnología innovadora y sus aplicaciones prácticas para organizaciones sin fines de lucro y trabajo humanitario especialmente en los países en vías de desarrollo. Connie es una conocida vocera de la industria para el impacto social de Bitcoin y aboga por una mayor diversidad e igualdad de oportunidades dentro de la comunidad bitcoiner.

Además, fue recientemente incluida dentro de las 100 personalidades más influyentes del mundo cripto (edición 2019) por Crypto Weekly.

Conversamos con ella durante LaBitConf, la conferencia latinoamericana de bitcoin y blockchain que se desarrolló la primera semana de diciembre en Santiago de Chile.

Contanos sobre los nuevos proyectos de BitGive.

Hoy lanzamos GiveTrack 1.0 -desarrollada en colaboración con Koibanx- que es la próxima versión de nuestra plataforma de seguimiento de donaciones. Tenemos cuatro proyectos de ONGs de Canadá, los Estados Unidos y dos que están basados ​​en Chile. Todos estos proyectos están recaudando fondos en bitcoin.

La plataforma permite recaudar fondos y también rastrear el dinero en blockchain. Así que las ONG se beneficiarán de la recaudación de fondos en bitcoin, de la transferencia de fondos en la red, del ahorro de tiempo y dinero. Las ONGs están utilizando billeteras multi firmas, por lo que cuentan con una mejor seguridad para sus fondos, y los donantes pueden rastrean en blockchain cómo se gasta el dinero y se analizan los resultados.

Eso es un gran paso con respecto a la transparencia y la anticorrupción, ¿verdad?

Sí exactamente. El concepto principal es el aspecto de transparencia en la construcción de la responsabilidad a través de blockchain. Lo estamos construyendo en la blockchain de Bitcoin y también estamos usando tecnología RSK, para registrar todo en blockchain y, eventualmente, para la construcción de contratos inteligentes.

¡Eso está muy bueno! ¿Qué pasa con los proyectos en América Latina?

Tenemos actualmente dos que están en funcionamiento ahora en la plataforma. Una es Desafío (ONG de Chile) que están recaudando fondos para la compra de equipos deportivos para estudiantes de bajos ingresos. Ellos recaudan dinero para apoyar a los estudiantes de bajos ingresos en deportes, entrenamiento y equipo, por lo que se interesan y motivan a los estudiantes a realizar una actividad saludable y a que se apasionan por algo en sus vidas. Ellos tienen los medios para hacer eso.

¿Cuál fue tu motivación para fundar BitGive?

La fundación tiene más de cinco años. Cuando aprendí por primera vez sobre esta tecnología, lo que realmente me inspiró fue que podés llegar a cualquier persona en cualquier lugar del mundo. Las personas que más lo necesitan a menudo están en países en desarrollo, en economías en desarrollo, en áreas realmente remotas, y no tienen acceso a servicios financieros, no tienen acceso a ONGs que puedan apoyarlos. Pero con bitcoin y otras criptomonedas podés acceder a estas personas directamente.

Así que eso es originalmente lo que me inspiró. También el potencial de que la tecnología despegaría y sería enorme, como el próximo internet, el próximo .com y yo quería asegurarme de que alguien prestara atención para que devuelva algo de todo eso a la sociedad a lo largo del tiempo.

BitGive es una fundación que apoya a otras organizaciones sin fines de lucro.

¿Cuál fue el que tuvo más impacto social en la historia de BitGive?

Esa es una pregunta difícil. Creo que todos han tenido impacto, pero creo que el más conocido es nuestro pozo de agua en Kenia porque todo el proyecto fue financiado con bitcoins. Así que se podía financiarlo, tocarlos… Y todo estaba financiado con bitcoins.

Muchos otros proyectos eran un componente de algo más grande. El proyecto en Kenia fue en una escuela para niñas, por lo que también se apoyaba a la escuela y a la comunidad vecina.

¿Qué pasa con la volatilidad en el precio de bitcoin, afecta esto a las donaciones?

A veces sí. Nos hacen mucho esa pregunta. No creo que se correlacione directamente, pero definitivamente tiene un efecto. Hemos visto que cuando el precio sube hay mucha actividad y suceden cosas como la que ocurrió el año pasado, cuando hubo un inversor temprano de bitcoin donó más de 50 millones de dólares en bitcoins. Obviamente, cuando el precio sube, vemos que suceden cosas así, pero también hemos tenido mucho apoyo en los tiempos de precios bajos, por lo que no siempre puedo correlacionarlo con el precio, lo cual es realmente bueno.

Finalmente, ¿cuáles son las actividades futuras de BitGive?

Nuestro enfoque ahora está en GiveTack. Se lanzó ahora en la versión 1.0, tenemos muchos planes para construirlo. Los próximos lanzamientos serán cosas como contratos inteligentes en RSK, nos gustaría tener una integración con un exchange para que podamos aceptar donaciones en fiat y otras criptomonedas y convertirlas en bitcoins. Pero la visión a largo plazo con GiveTack es armar un panel global para las ONG. Y poder ver que está sucediendo en tiempo real, todo fluyendo en blockchain y poder presentar eso de una manera más interesante para analizar los datos y visualizar la información en una escala global, saber de dónde proviene el dinero, dónde está, cuáles son los resultados, todo lo que está sucediendo. Si hay una emergencia o un desastre natural, poder redirigir los fondos a eso, de inmediato.

Hay dos maneras. Una es ir a nuestra nueva plataforma givetrack.org y ver los proyectos y apoyarlos. Los fondos irán directamente a las organizaciones benéficas para que obtengan el 100% de su donación. Connie Gallippi is the Founder and Executive Director of BitGive, the first government recognized Bitcoin nonprofit, bridging the gap between an innovative technology and its practical applications for nonprofits and humanitarian work in the developing world. Connie is a well-known industry spokesperson for the social impact of Bitcoin and advocating for more diversity and equal opportunity in the digital currency community.

She was recently included among the 100 most influential personalities in the crypto world (2019 edition) by Crypto Weekly.

Tell us about BitGive new projects

Today we launched GiveTruck 1.0 developed in partnership with Koibanx which is the next version of our donations tracking platform. We have four projects from NGOs from Canada, the US and two that are Chilean based. So they are fundraising in bitcoin.

The concept of the platform is that you can fundraise but you can also track the money on the blockchain. So the NGOs will benefit from fundraising in bitcoin, in transfering funds on the network, saving time and money, they are using multi signature wallets so better security for their funds, and then tracking on the blockchain for how the money is spend and looking at the results.

So, It’s a big step regarding transparency and anticorruption, right?

Yes, exactly. The main concept is the transparency aspect in building accountability through blockchain. We are building it on the Bitcoin blockchain and we are also using RSK technology as well for notarising everything on their blockchain and eventually building in smart contracts.

That is exciting! What about projects in Latin America?

So we have two that are alive now in the platform. One is with Desafío and they are raising funds for athletic equipment for low income students. They raise money to support low income students in sports, in training and equipment, so they get more interested and motivated in something healthy, and they get passionate about something in their lives. They have the means to do that.

What was your motivation to fund BitGive?

It is over five years old now. When I first learned about this technology what really inspired me was that you can reach anyone anywhere. People who are most in need are often in developing countries, in developing economies, in really remote areas, and they do not have access to financial services, they do not have access to NGOs that can support them. But with bitcoin and cryptocurrencies you can access them directly.
So that is originally what inspired me. I also so the potential that the technology was going to take off and be huge, like the next internet, the next .com and I wanted to make sure that there was somebody paying attention to give back and how to socially impact based on the success of the industry over time.

BitGive is a foundation that supports other non profits.

What was the one that had more social impact in the history of BitGive?

That is a tough question. I think they all had but I think the one that is most commonly known is our water well in Kenya because the entire project was funded with bitcoins. So you can fund it, touch them, fell them, and it’s all funded with bitcoin.

A lot of other projects were a component of something larger. The project in Kenya was at a girls school so it supports the school and the neighboring community as well.

What about the volatility in the price of bitcoin, does this affect donations?

Sometimes, yes. We get that question a lot. I don’t think it correlates directly but it definitely has an effect. So we have seen when the price is up a lot of activity and things like the one that happened last year where there was an early adopter that gave away over 50 millions dollars in bitcoin to charity. Obviously when the price is up we see things like that happening but we have had a lot of support in down times too, so I can’t always correlate it to the price, which is good, really.

Finally, what are BitGive future activities?

Our focus now is on GiveTrack. Its launched now on 1.0, we have a lot of plans for it building it out. The next few releases will be things like smart contracts on RSK, we will like to have an integration with an exchange so we can accept donations in fiat and other cryptocurrencies and convert them into bitcoin. But the much longer term vision with Bittack is like a global dashboard for NGOs. And being able to see that is happening in real time because is all flowing on the blockchain and being able to present that in a more interesting way for analysing the data and visualising the data on a global scale like where is money coming from, where is it going to. What are the results, what is happening. If there is a disaster, being able to redirect the funds to that, right away.

How can anybody donate to BitGive?

There is two ways. One is to go to our new platform givetrack.org and look at the projects on that and support them. The funds will go directly to the charities so they are getting 100% of your donation.
